Stonington Architect Designs a Coastal Inspired “Concept Window” for Marvin

Stonington, CT, Dec. 12, 2016 –It was an architect’s dream assignment: design the ideal window free from any code requirements or design constraints.  The inspiration for Architect Michael McKinley’s window comes from the coast. The design, a French outswing, is painted a hazy blue and is framed in a grey weathered mahogany.

“The gesture of opening the sashes to a sunny salt marsh, beach and ocean creates an intriguing and memorable image. The color of the sash reminds me of sea glass and I see the natural mahogany frame and trim weathering to driftwood,” explains McKinley.

The window interior and exterior have the same detailing so when the window is open, the light blue sash embraces the exterior and weathered mahogany frame.

ABX 2016 – Boston Convention & Exhibition Center

The window was recently on display at ArchitectureBoston Expo or ABX, one of the largest building and design trade shows in the country.  A.W. Hastings, the New England Distributor for Marvin Windows and Doors and the display sponsor, set out to “peer into the creative minds” of a select group of architects by challenging of them to design a window in the color, glass and style of their choice.  While most of the other designs emphasized ornate sash patterns and traditional colors, the “McKinley Window” is a simple three pane form that is distinguished by its operation and palette of colors and materials.

Michael McKinley, Architect

The “McKinley Window” is meant to inspire architects, builders and clients to think out of the box. Window and door detailing is critical to the success of any building.

If you are designing or renovating a home, here are some things to consider when selecting your windows:

  1. A Window’s geometry, size, shape and sequence create an overall personality for both the exterior and interior of your home.
  2. Windows don’t have to be white! Color adds interest and character so consider using a color even if it is a neutral shade. Today, most windows are clad with aluminum or vinyl and come in many standard colors.
  3. You’ll want to study your window color in the field by painting a window mockup that can be viewed next to the exterior siding.
  4. Varying window types (double hung, awning, etc.) sash patterns, and even window materials create a thoughtful, custom look.

#NextGenStyle (7 of 7) – Traditional American Four-Square

Mike’s #NextGenStyle is a classic 2828 Next Generation Double Hung with a Y-Diamond Lite Pattern, traditional to American Four-Squares found in the historic General Electric Plot in his home region of Albany-Schenectady, NY. Bringing authenticity to his design is Ebony Clad Sash with a Stone White Clad Frame, Potter Casing, Thick Exterior Sill, Pre-Finished Clear Coat Cherry Interior, Oil Rubbed Bronze Hardware, and a Retractable Screen.

Seven winning designs were built to order in the Marvin factory and displayed at the 2016 LBM Expo.

#NextGenStyle (6 of 7) – The Beauty of Simplicity

Ron’s winning #NextGenStyle Next Generation Double Hung demonstrates the beauty of simplicity. Featuring Bright Silver Pearlescent Cladding, this large double hung offers clear, open glass allowing the beauty of the outside to enter the space. The fresh white interior frames the view and is accented by sleek Satin Nickel Hardware. Beauty and simplicity are the two words used to best describe the inspiration behind Ron’s #NextGenStyle.

“It’s exciting that Marvin gives us the capability of absolutely clean, undecorated details that fit contemporary sensibilities. Large sizes, square sticking, and no SDL can turn a traditional window into a modern design element.”

#NextGenStyle (5 of 7) – Victorian Fireside

Jim’s #NextGenStyle submission was inspired by Victorian Architecture and the warmth of being fireside during cold New England winters. His design features a Next Generation Double Hung Round Top with a curved lite cut which offers character, but keeps enough open glass space to allow for enjoyment of the snowy New England landscape. The Clear Finish White Oak Interior gives the home a comfortable traditional feel, while colorful Wineberry Cladding adds to the Victorian home’s exterior palette.

When asked about the design process and how he felt when seeing his window in person, Jim replied, “I wanted to design something a little more traditional. Seeing a design on paper is one thing, but seeing the window in person makes it easier to appreciate.”

#NextGenStyle (4 of 7) – Mid Century Modern Meets Contemporary

Bonnie’s inspiration for her #NextGenStyle window comes from Architect Frank Lloyd Wright. She envisions several of these Next Generation Double Hung windows going across the second floor of a Wright inspired home. When she saw her window in person, Bonnie said, “seeing the details of my design come to life is really interesting. It’s amazing how the style options from Marvin can combine to create so many different looks.”

The design is a 3’ square double hung with a “Modified T” Simulated Divided Lite Pattern and Square Sticking. The sash are configured to be 1/3 over 2/3 so that no matter how the window is operated, the T Pattern remains. The exterior is Ebony while interiors feature a warm Honey Stain on Douglas Fir with Oil Rubbed Bronze Hardware. To ensure convenience and privacy, her design even includes Marvin’s Light Filtering Interior Shades in Ivory.

#NextGenStyle (3 of 7) – Adirondack Camp Influence

The inspiration for Jody’s #NextGenStyle design was the original windows in his cottage in the Adirondacks. During a recent renovation, he determined that Benjamin Muncil, the renowned architect of many Adirondack Great Camps (including White Pine Camp, once used as Calvin Coolidge’s “Summer White House”), likely designed his cottage. Jody’s Next Generation Double Hung replicates Muncil’s simple but classic style, with its distinctive eighteen lite top sash.

I wasn’t quite certain if I was on the right track when I submitted my entry to the Next-Gen window design contest. Although entrants were encouraged to design their own window, I was infatuated with the simple, but distinctive design of the 1905 double hungs in our Adirondack cabin. So, I stole that design. However, I felt I would be given a pass if I gave credit to the renowned ADK architect who had originated the style. And, I guess I was. But I should also add that “my” Next-Gen shows off Marvin’s ability to replicate existing historic designs as well as produce the creative designs that were also entered in the contest. When I saw the final result of my design, I thought “’Well, Benjamin Muncil would probably approve.’ I know I did.”

#NextGenStyle (2 of 7) – Modern Farm House

“I spent the better part of my career dreaming up design for other people’s homes. This experience made me really think about what I wanted for my house and it also made me see that the walls and windows that surround a home are a big part of the overall design.”

#NextGenStyle (1 of 7) – Celebrating our Family Tree

Mary’s #NextGenStyle is inspired by the close ties she has to her family. The warm brown tone of her window’s Hazelnut Stained Interior brings to life her “Tree” Simulated Divided Lite Pattern, which pays homage to her parents (the trunk of the tree) and her siblings (the branches). “Knowing Marvin can accommodate just about any design request, I tried to think outside the box and not be confined to the usual style of a window,” Mary shared. “Reflecting on what is most important to me, family, was the inspiration for the family tree pattern.” While designing the window, Mary also visualized the sun filtering through the glass and onto an African Violet plant, which originally belonged to her mother.

“When the window was unveiled I got a bit choked up. It exceeded my expectations and sharing the story of my parents love of their children really brought the window to life.”

#NextGenStyle Collection Wows at LBM 2016

It is really easy to write the words “Marvin is all about design possibilities”, maybe even easier to skim over them as you are reading a marketing piece. Many of us spend substantial time and energy trying to bring this statement to life for everyone we meet. With all the energy focused on other people’s Marvin inspiration, how often do you think about what YOUR Marvin style would be?  If your answer is ‘never’ (or even if its ‘all the time!’), keep reading!

We posed this very question to the Hastings community and we received 32 incredibly inspired, very diverse submissions. It was difficult to choose just a few to actually bring to life, but we landed on the finalists and asked our friends at Marvin Windows and Doors to handcraft each one based on the original inspiration. I am proud to announce that we are publicly unveiling the 7 inspired designs that make up our 2016 #NextGenStyle Collection at the LBM Show in Providence, RI this week.
